Montreal Blitz & NY Sharks Join WFA

The Women’s Football Alliance is pleased to announce that the Montreal Blitz and New York Sharks have officially signed on as full members and will play in the WFA for the 2017 season.

Two of the most recognizable and longest-lasting teams in women’s football, the Blitz and Sharks are based in Montreal, Quebec and New York City, respectively, and will compete in the Northeast Region as members of Division II for 2017.

“We are excited to see two extremely competitive and historic teams make their move to the WFA,” stated Lisa King, WFA Director of Operations. “We know there will be some amazing football games in 2017 for our fans and we can’t wait to see the Blitz and Sharks in action.”

Established in 2001, the Blitz are the only Canadian women’s football team to play in a US-based league. The team played for 15 seasons in the IWFL, accomplished twelve winning seasons, six playoff berths, four division titles, three Founder’s Bowl Championships, and  the 2012 World Championship. In addition, the Blitz have been a consistent source of talent for Canada’s team in the IFAF Women’s World Championship, sending five players to the 2010 team and three to the 2013 team, both times leading the Canadian team to the championship game and the silver medal. For this summer’s championship, the team will send at least ten players in a quest to prevent the USA from winning a “three-peat” and leading Canada to the gold medal on their home turf!

Meanwhile, the Sharks return to the WFA after having previously played there from 2011-2013. Originally known as the Long Island Sharks, which was a champion flag football team, the Sharks played their first tackle football game on December 11, 1999.  Since then, the Sharks have been perennial contenders in all three leagues in which they have played and never had a losing regular season. The team clinched thirteen playoff berths, nine division titles, and one World Championship in 2002.

While the Blitz and Sharks remain grateful to their former league for the opportunities over the years, the teams are happy to now play for the world’s #1 league.  Specifically, they look forward to renewing old rivalries in the Northeast Region, continuing their historic success against these teams, and cementing their status as favorites to win the Division II National Championship — perhaps they might even be playing each other in the playoffs.

The WFA is excited to have more elite, iconic teams of this caliber and eagerly anticipates the opportunities that come with having teams in the USA’s largest city and expanding the league into Canada, not the least of which will be those for the league’s future growth in 2018 and beyond.
